Am I Crazy? How to Recognize Gaslighting & Reality Distortion
The fundamental purpose of gaslighting is to confuse you.
If you didn’t grow up in an environment where reality was routinely twisted, you will likely remain confused for a long time. You might even find yourself deeply angry that no one ever warned you this could happen.
The Four Violations of Reality: Identifying the Patterns of Gaslighting
You know you are being gaslighted when you experience these specific, systematic attacks on your perception:
The Erasure of Words: You are explicitly told that what was said just yesterday or last week was never actually spoken.
The Denial of Sight: You are told that what you saw clearly with your own eyes is not what happened.
The Minimization of Your Soul: You are told that your feelings, your memory, and your foundational experiences are wild, dramatic exaggerations.
The Double Standard: Their behavior is never held to the same rigid standard they aggressively demand from you.
At its core, gaslighting is not a complex psychological mystery. It is a calculated combination of lying and shifting blame. Both of these are direct, intentional violations of truth and character.
The True Baseline: You are responsible for your choices and your character, and they must be also.
When someone consistently demands that you surrender your perception of reality to cover for their lack of character, you are being gaslighted. You will survive this—but your survival depends on you stepping out of their fog and completely refusing to negotiate with a lie.
Refusing to Negotiate with the Lie: Closing the Mental Courtroom
When you realize your reality is being manipulated, your immediate instinct is to argue. You want to bring the screenshots. You want to pull up the receipts. You want to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are right and they are lying.
But you must understand: gaslighting is not a debate about the facts; it is a war on your sanity.
They do not lack the information; they lack the integrity to admit it. When you argue with a lie, you are giving it power. You are acting as if the truth is up for debate. It is not.
To step out of the fog, you must learn to stand quietly in the light:
1. Stop Trying to Convince Them
You do not need their signature on the truth for the truth to be real. If you saw it, heard it, or lived it, that is the reality. Quietly close the courtroom in your mind. The trial is over; you know exactly what happened.
2. End the Circular Arguments
When they deny reality, do not engage in the back-and-forth. State the truth once, and then immediately disconnect. You can use these scripts to protect your space:
"We remember this differently, and I’m not going to argue about it."
"I know what I saw, and I'm not going to debate my own eyes."
3. Trust the God Who Sees
Scripture tells us that "nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight" (Hebrews 4:13). When someone is rewriting reality in your home, remember that you are not the only witness. God saw the event, He heard the words, and He sees the integrity of your heart. You can rest because the Ultimate Judge holds the true record.
Returning to Truth: Anchored on Unshakeable Ground
You cannot force a dishonest heart to value the truth. But you can choose to preserve the mind God gave you.
Let go of the need to make them admit they are wrong, step out of the exhausting whirlwind of their confusion, and anchor your feet firmly on the unshakeable ground of what is real.
Questions to Consider
How much energy am I wasting trying to get an insincere person to agree to the facts of my own reality?
Which of the four violations of reality (erasure, denial, minimization, double standards) do I experience most frequently?
What would it look like to walk out of the "mental courtroom" today and let God hold the true record?
Prayer
Father,
The fog in my home is heavy, and I have found myself wondering if I am truly losing my mind. Break the spell of this confusion. Remind my soul that You are the Author of Truth, and You do not play games with my sanity.
I close the courtroom in my mind today. I stop trying to force an insincere heart to validate what I know is real. I anchor my feet on the unshakeable rock of Your Word. You are the Witness to every hidden conversation and every twisted word. Keep me steady in the light while the storm rolls past.
Amen.
